The Health Benefits Of Florida Citrus
Everyone knows that citrus is full of Vitamin C, as is evident in the 1959 Florida Citrus Commission advertisement at left. What many people do not know is that the health promoting properties of citrus extend well beyond this obvious benefit. Including Florida citrus as part of a balanced diet is a powerful way to improve your health and supply your body with the nutrients it needs. Florida oranges and grapefruit contain more nutrients per calorie than apples, bananas, grapes, pears, and most common fruits. These nutrients include not only vitamin C, but also potassium, calcium, folate, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, phosphorous, magnesium and copper. They also contain dietary fiber (more than any of the other top 20 fruits and vegetables). Many studies suggest that the regular consumption of citrus products play a positive role in the prevention of cardiovascular and heart disease, stroke, scurvy, hypertension, cancer, certain birth defects, anaemia, and cataracts.
